Parallel compression, or “New York” compression as it’s sometimes called, is an example of using an effects sends to dramatically affect a signal, then blending it back with the original to obtain a result that you couldn’t (normally) get. This video, the last of the recent run looking at effects inserts and sends, looks at this technique in the context of a genuine mix, again using the example of “It Is Well” by Joe Gilder.
The compressor used in the example is a Native Instruments VC160 and has a “Dry” control that enables you to create the parallel compression as an insert on the source track, by blending the original dry signal with the effected signal all in the one plug-in.
